The human story has been documented in mural form since the early days of civilization. Evidence of murals have been left for today’s modern onlookers by civilizations as ancient as the inhabitants of Sulawesi, Ancient Egypt, and Mexico. There are many more but today something different is happening with Murals. The Mural Arts Program of Philadelphia has created what is akin to an outdoor art gallery amongst today’s modern city scape. The Mural Arts program originally began in 1984 as a city initiative to manage widespread graffiti sprawl across Philadelphia. Now it is a transformative and dynamic program that changes the way cities around the World interact with art, culture, and the civic and
social opportunities community living brings.
As it stands today, the Mural Arts program in Philadelphia beautifies, inspires, and empowers artists, the community, and the city to view and interact with art differently. Mural Arts fosters Art Education, environmental justice, and community engagement by their efforts. Passport Pennsylvania visited many murals including the Promise of Biotechnology, Untitled, Pride and Progress, Garden of Delight, and many more. We were inspired by every single mural we had the honor to visit and in so many ways. Our team documents this journey in our recently released Podcast entitled Mural Arts Philadelphia, The World’s Largest Outdoor Art Gallery.
